NFL Kicks of the Week, Week 3: Tyler Loop's 56-Yard Walk-Off in Rio
By FKS Journal · Published · 4 min read
The first NFL game ever played in Rio de Janeiro ended with a field goal. Tyler Loop hit from 56 yards with one second left to beat Dallas 34-31 at the Maracanã. Last January he missed a 44-yarder that would have won Baltimore the AFC North. This one went in.
Kick of the Week: Tyler Loop, 56 yards, walk-off in Rio
Dallas had just tied it at 31 on a Brandon Aubrey chip shot with 10 seconds left, after a pass interference call set the Cowboys up near the goal line. Overtime looked likely. Baltimore got the ball back with seven seconds left. Lamar Jackson hit Zay Flowers for 27 yards and called timeout with one second on the clock, which the AP called an "alert timeout call."
That left Tyler Loop 56 yards from the posts, with Nick Moore snapping and Ryan Eckley holding, in front of a crowd that had never seen an NFL game. It was good, and the Ravens won 34-31.

Our model put the kick at 65% before the snap, and NFL kickers made 172 of 271 tries from 55 to 57 yards over the last five seasons, 63%. The Ravens' own site called it a redemption: Loop's 44-yard miss as time expired in Week 18 last season cost Baltimore the division. Kickers are judged by the next kick, and this was a good one. Aubrey also had a 59-yarder blocked in the third quarter.
Runner-up: Spencer Shrader, 53 yards, Colts over Texans

Minnesota was up one on Tampa Bay with 3:15 left when Will Reichard hit a 56-yarder. That made the Bucs need a touchdown, and Reichard added a 43-yarder at the end to make the final 23-16.

Shrader's second entry this week: a 58-yarder with 1:08 left in the first half that put the Colts up six. Without it, his 53-yarder at the end would only have tied the game.
Fifth: Jason Myers, 57 yards, Seahawks at Commanders

Jason Myers hit a 57-yarder right before halftime in Landover, and Washington's Drew Stevens answered with a 57-yarder of his own. It was the only game this week with two makes of 57 or more. Washington won 33-31.

How we pick the Kicks of the Week
Every made field goal gets a Kick Score: how unlikely it was (one minus the make chance, times 10), plus 0.15 for each yard past 45, plus the moment: 8 for a walk-off winner, 4 for a go-ahead kick, 3 for a tying kick, 1 for any other fourth-quarter or overtime kick in a one-score game. The moment counts in full on kicks with a make chance of 60% or less and shrinks on chip shots, so a long bomb can outrank a short winner. Make chances come from the same distance and conditions model behind the MAKE Rankings. A kicker can appear at most twice. Kicker points are 3 per field goal and 1 per extra point, divided by each team’s points in the same games. A high share can mean a great kicker, or an offense that often stalls before the end zone, so read it next to MAKE.
