College Kicks of the Week, Week 5: Tony Sterner Ends It for Louisiana

Tony Sterner kicked three field goals against Arkansas State on Saturday night: one to cut the lead, one to tie it with 5:38 left, and a 37-yarder on the last play to win it. Louisiana 23, Arkansas State 20, in the Sun Belt opener for both teams. Sterner hasn't missed a field goal this season.

Kick of the Week: Tony Sterner, 37 yards, final play

We couldn't find a 2026 video of this game from Louisiana, the Sun Belt or ESPN on YouTube, so this week the field graphic tells it.

Solomon Baggett's touchdown run put Arkansas State up three in the fourth quarter, and Tony Sterner answered with a 25-yarder that tied it at 20 with 5:38 left. Louisiana then drove 72 yards in 13 plays and used the final 3:54. Lunch Winfield's 14-yard completion to Kristion Brooks with 24 seconds left set up a 37-yarder. It was good as time expired.

A 37-yarder isn't hard by college standards: kickers made 946 of 1,213 tries from 36 to 38 yards over the last five seasons, 78%, and our model gave this one 79%. It tops the list because it was the last play and because nothing else this week combined a hard kick with a big moment. The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns are 4-1.

How we pick the Kicks of the Week

Every made field goal gets a Kick Score: how unlikely it was (one minus the make chance, times 10), plus 0.15 for each yard past 45, plus the moment: 8 for a walk-off winner, 4 for a go-ahead kick, 3 for a tying kick, 1 for any other fourth-quarter or overtime kick in a one-score game. The moment counts in full on kicks with a make chance of 60% or less and shrinks on chip shots, so a long bomb can outrank a short winner. Make chances come from the same distance and conditions model behind the MAKE Rankings. A kicker can appear at most twice. College numbers cover every game with an FBS team in it.
